Iain Bowen's 'Arose from the Azure Main' is one of the most popular and acclaimed timelines on AlternateHistory.com. Beginning with the dislocation of the United Kingdom from 1980 to 1730, the effects are predictably enormous. In 'Dislocated to Success', Norman St John-Stevas, Viscount Fawsley, one of the story's best loved characters, looks back on the extraordinary event and what followed it, in 'memoirs' written fifteen years after what has become known as 'the Dislocation'.

This is an excellent "ISOT" book. The twist here is that instead of a small island or town, the island that's tossed back 250 years into the past is 1980 Great Britain (with Northern Ireland thrown in to complicate matters even further). It's written as a memoir by the Conservative MP who becomes Margaret Thatcher's Foreign Minister. The narrator is smart, cosmopolitan, wry, funny, & snarky. The author is remarkably knowledgeable about 1980's UK politics and 1730's European politics & the vagaries of 18th Century colonial policies. It's well written, but needs a stronger copy-editor. The author's assumptions about the reactions of the various European monarchs to the sudden appearance off their shores of 1980 UK are reasonable, and the progression of events is in fact captivating.

As an American reader, I found I needed to google UK political characters more than I'm used to; Mr Bowen can get VERY inside-baseball, and Maggie Thatcher's cabinets are decidedly not an area of particular expertise for me--in fact, most of my (almost nil) knowledge derived from the movie & Broadway versions of "Billy Elliot." Or used to--Now I know more about (mostly retired or dead) British pols than any normal human would care to. Some may find that off-putting, but I rather enjoyed it. It certainly enabled me to appreciate the author's snark. Which is a big part of enjoying the book.

One word of warning--I see that one reviewer here was quite put off by the format of the book. For those of us used to the formulas of Stirling, Flint, Turtledove, etc, (focusing on a few key characters, novelistic character development, dialog, narrative, lots of derring-do), the format & presentation of "Dislocated to Success" may be unfamiliar & jarring. It is written as the memoir of a diplomat, and so sets forth alt-historical development from one person's viewpoint. It worked fine for me, but I can imagine it might not for everybody. In fact, the book has led (not "lead," which is a metal, not the past tense of a verb--annoying little glitch in the book) me to Mr Bowen's astounding work--simply amazing in depth, breadth, detail, and scope--"Arose From Out the Azure Main" on AlternateHistory.com. This magnum opus, of which "Dislocated" is but one thread, is just enthralling, not to mention terrifyingly huge. If you enjoy "Dislocated," "Arose From Out..." should definitely be your next stop.

Dislocated to Success Iain Bowen 9781539690917 Books Reviews

The author had an interesting story to tell. BUT. The writing style was very dry, like a government report. If you are looking for an adventure story this is not it.
I'd agree that the plot is too involved with the various political and diplomatic struggles. I think the choice to situate the book as a memoir hampered some of the more interesting ideas because they were lost in minutia of one person's diplomatic experiencs. Definitely a cool idea and not a bad read but left me wanting a lot more information about what others thoufht, and a fleshed out historical context.
Terrible, Followed the politics too closely. I found it boring and in many places unreadable. I'm an inveterate reader across a broad range of genres, this is one of the worst books I have read in years.
A pleasant Alt-Hist or Displaced Tale! Good Writing and a lovely bit of bringing back Thatcher and the 1970's!!!! I only wish that Bowen had written more! Wc
The somewhat hackneyed conceit of an island in the sea of time gains a new and glorious life with this tale of the most storied island of them all - the United KIngdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. When the Britons of 1980 discover the rest of the world is still living in 1730, HM Government is faced with a Herculean task to make sense of it all and, first and foremost, keep the nation safe. This is an insider's view of those hectic early years after "the Dislocation". The narrator's voice is assured and utterly believable, the unfolding of events perfectly logical. This excellent addition to the annals of alternate history leaves one looking eagerly forward to the next volume of the Viscount's memoirs.
A really enjoyable alt-history novel, about Thatcher-era Great Britain being suddenly transported ("dislocated") to the 1730s. It's told as the memoirs, about 30 years after, of a gossipy, gay second level government minister. While S.M. Sterling, in his Nantucket novels, and Eric Flint in the 1632 series do the "<entity> transported back in time" better (Great Britain is too large), this is fun, and the narrator is entertaining, and to this American ear, sounds authentic.
The return of the Empire! Enjoyed this thoroughly. If you are looking for fast action, this is not your story. If you are looking for a time-stream thriller of what would happen if the UK (minus the Channel Islands apparently) arrived backward in time, from the view of a 1980s politico, you have found the right place. I enjoyed the concept, and would recommend to anyone interested in history, alternate history (thinking of For Want of a Nail). This takes a lot of the story to the "grand stage" instead of the micro-stage of a few people thrown back in time. My only misgiving is that this time, the British appeared to be top-down driven in their Empire building, when in our history it was usually a bottom-up affair with business, missionary, and settlement usually running far ahead of the administration. I can't see it being otherwise the second time around. The writer doesn't know enough about Canadian culture, thinking them too "polite" to remake things on the other side of the Atlantic. While yes they are polite Canadians are fighters when put to the task. Likewise, I think the American treatment was too light. Maybe there will be a sequel, something with a different twist and told from another perspective?
